The Buttercross

The Buttercross was erected in 1734 to shelter people selling dairy produce. It replaced the pre-conquest St Oswald's Cross. It was a posthumous gift of Solomon Dupeer. Tradition asserts that Solomon Dupeer was responsible for betraying Gibralter to the British in 1704. The 18th Century benches survive and are still in use today. The water pump seen at the near corner was endowed by Elizabeth I.
