Aqua-Pura
Many thanks to those schools that attended the Aqua-Pura ‘Come-and Try-It’ Coaching Day on Friday 3rd October at South Leeds Indoor Bowls and Athletics Centre. There were 9 schools represented with a total of 85 girls who had the opportunity to try Pole Vault, High Jump, Discus, Hammer, Sprints, Hurdles and X-Country.

Thanks to a successful ‘Awards for All’ bid, LSAA has been able to purchase a Norwich Union Shine Awards CD-Rom for every Primary School in Leeds. These CD’s retail at £21.50 and include lesson plans in addition to the awards package. To obtain your free copy of the CD you must attend a 2 hour workshop. These are currently been organised and further details will be sent to schools and posted on the LSAA website. The first session will be on Friday 5th December from 3pm – 5pm at Horsforth School. Other sessions will be planned for the New Year. For further details contact Sara Birkinshaw on (0113) 3950162.
Over 120 Primary Schools have entered the competition this year. The first competition took place on 4th November with heats taking place at various venues throughout the City. The format has altered slightly with all schools now getting the opportunity to compete twice as after the initial heats schools will either become part of the Cup or Plate Challenge depending upon their results. The Quarter-Finals will take place in January, Semi-Finals in February with the Grand Final for both the Cup and Plate taking place in March.
It is the intention of LSAA and Leeds City Council Sport Development Unit to organise a Leeds High Schools Indoor Athletics Championships at the new indoor athletics centre at South Leeds Stadium Complex. This will take place in the Spring Term and details will be sent to schools and posted on the LSAA website.
Trials for Leeds City Council Teams
Leeds City Council sends representative teams in various primary and secondary age-groups to competitions throughout the summer and winter seasons. Trials are held before each team is selected and this information is normally sent into schools. The dates for trials will also be posted on the LSAA website. The next set of trials is likely to be taking place in January to send a representative team to Dortmund in March 2004. Age-groups normally range from School Years 5 – 10.
30, 40, 50 Club
A brand new health and fitness programme will be launched in schools from January 2004. The basic concept is that a school has a pre-measured 1 mile course set somewhere within their boundaries. Each child will be given a record card and are encouraged to complete at least 1 miles per week (either walking or running) during lunchtime, after-school or even in curriculum time. For each 1 mile they complete, an adult should sign off their record card. They are only allowed to complete a maximum of 2 miles in any 1 week period and after they have attained 30 miles they can then apply for a certificate to become a member of the 30 miles club. They then work towards progressing to the 40 miles club and 50 miles club in which there is a certificate for each one. Certificates will be available, and even parents & ALL School staff can be encouraged to join in this healthy lifestyle.
Further details will be both on the website shortly, and sent to all Leeds Schools ready for the January launch or contact Sara Birkinshaw at the Sports Development Unit or Pete Robins Chair of LSAA.
