Lesson 1 Personal Safety
discusses practical rules for personal safety and suggests safe procedures in the event of
being followed, approached by a stranger, on public transport, at home alone and being
offered unknown substances.
Lesson 2 Medicinal Drugs and their Use defines a drug as a substance that alters
body functions and discusses the use of drugs as medicines to combat illnesses; identifies
common medicines and concludes medicines should only be accepted from certain 'caring
people'.
Lesson 3 Illegal Drugs and their Misuse identifies, describes and discusses
various illegal drugs - their form, how used, their effects on body and mind and the law
relating to drug dealing and usage; pupils should have the opportunity to ask questions of
persons in authority.
Lesson 4 Risks and Consequences discusses the risks young people take in general
and particularly when drinking alcohol, smoking tobacco, sniffing solvents and using
illegal drugs (e.g. crack cocaine) and the consequences to themselves and to others when
things go wrong.
Lesson 5 Dealing with Medical Emergencies demonstrates how to deal with
accidents and emergencies, including drug- related emergencies; teaches practical
emergency First Aid, including DR ABC, resuscitation and the recovery position.
Lesson 6 Peer Influence and Peer Pressure defines peer influence and peer
pressure and, through role-play exercises, explores ways to change someone's mind or get
them to do something they don't want to; discusses techniques that can be used to resist
such pressure.
Lesson 7 The Media and Advertising discusses the power of the media and how it
affects our decision-making and attitudes; identifies the various techniques used to sell
products and discusses the importance of considering alternatives and making balanced
decisions.
Lesson 8 You Have a Choice invites pupils to consider who or what most
influences their decisions and life- styles; discusses that they always have choices and
need to make decisions based on what is right and best for themselves and others.
Lesson 9 Stress discusses the many stresses of modern life and encourages pupils
to consider what things stresses them most and how they react when stressed; identifies
simple actions that can relieve stress and make problems more manageable.
Lesson 10 Self-Esteem explains that how we think and feel about ourselves
influences our behaviour and how we react react in different situations; discusses how to
improve our self-esteem and includes with 'You are special because .....' exercises.
Lesson 11 Assertiveness investigates different types of behaviour - passive,
aggressive and assertive - through role-play, concluding an assertive person is confident
and has firm opinions; pupils consider how they can be more assertive and more in control.
Lesson 12 Rights and Responsibilities considers young peoples' rights and
responsibilities and concludes the basis of citizenship is that to enjoy their rights they
must accept their responsibilities; invites pupils to sign up to a set of own rights and
own responsibilities.
Lesson 13 Personal Support discusses the need for personal support systems and
invites pupils to consider individuals and organisations they could turn to for comfort
and advice when in difficulty; provides information on national and local help
organisations.
