Those of you familiar with this site will notice that this page replaces Thought for the Month. I thought a nice vague title like View Point would suit it better considering the fact that it doesn't really get updated most months…

Living with Finalists

Once upon a time we were bright eyed bushy tailed freshers saying nervous hellos to strange fellow students who came from up north or down south that you didn't want to be rude to in case you ended up with no friends. And now we're not. Three years have gone and some of us are about to disappear into the ether of the real world. Apparently you get paid money that you don't have to pay back (apart from some tax) (and loan repayments). The only problem is the small matter of finals before you get there.

Which happens to be the current problem for my four non-medic flat-mates. Having spent the past six months turning the bass up (admittedly sometimes in response to the early morning drilling from the flat above…) the household has suddenly attained a monastic quality. The networked computers are now being used for work and not for blowing each other up with vicious weapons of war. Doors silently get closed only to open for toilet intervals and to heat microwave meals in a kitchen that is slowly accumulating the debris of finalist life: pizza boxes, unwashed plates, some strange green fluffy growth in what was once a teapot (we think).

You realise the situation is serious when your flatmates are renting a room for £100 a week and spend six of those nights in the library, jealously guarding the coveted reading desk in the upper gallery with the south-facing window… It almost feels as though student life has prematurely come to an end. We've even stopped going to the Safeway's (500 metres away) in favour of the Marks & Spencer (100 metres away) because apparently the food's better. Well the Scotch Roast Beef sandwiches are anyway (the ones with the roast onions and crispy lettuce…). Oh well… Party's over for now. Better start investigating this real world a bit more closely…

ps Good luck to those of you who are. And the finalists too...
