A note on compression

Having experimented with different ways of getting the best picture from the smallest file, I have settled on this:

Take the photo on the best setting your camera will give (that gives me a file size of about 1MB).

Edit it in a program that allows you to specify the compression when you save (some don't). Experiment by resaving an unchanged picture at various compression rates until your new file is the same size as the old one. In Corel Photopaint that is at 9 (the numbers are meaningless - every program seems to use a different system).

Having saved your edited photo use resizer free from http://www.virtualzone.de/ at a compression of 85. This program allows you to process many photos at once and offers a wide range of options on size (more than other bulk resizers I have tried).
