The haunting of Pussywillow

An early ghost story from the annals of Judy Farncombe. This one deals with pets - do they have souls? The answer is yes. Can they get tied to the earth plane upon death? The answer is yes once more - read on.

The scene

The story

Many moons ago, when I was a teenager and full of energy, I was noted for my ability to be able to astral travel consciously (no, not lucid dreaming but the real thing - lucky me). I was also noted for being very fond of cats. My parents would not let me have a cat as we were always travelling between houses (they own two main residences and others they let out) and they did not want to bother with pets. This meant that I was always trying to get to know the local cats for a quick cuddle and stroke so I could hear a luscious purr.

On one particular visit to the country house I took to my bed for a good night's sleep, and awoke in the small, dark hours of the night, refreshed. This is the time when astral travelling would take place. I left my body and was floating about wondering what to do. If you have ever astral travelled, the problem once you have left your body is deciding what to do as half your conscious thought processes seem to have been left behind. I used to get around the problem by making a decision before going to sleep, as to a possible destination, should I float off. I had forgotten to do so this time so I was at a loose end (excuse the pun - silver cord - boom boom).

I found that I was gradually floating away from my body and out of the building. I stopped out-side the house, and there in the road was Pussywillow. She was crying and dragging her poor little body. She could not use her back legs. I bent down and started to stroke her. She tried to run away from me again, as she had done so so many times before, but could not due to her injuries. I stoked her, and as I did so she began to purr. She even started to weave around my legs and stroke me with her tail. She had forgotten her injuries and was free to move again.

The cat

One of the neighbours at the country house had a lilac point Siamese cat called Pussywillow. Like most highly strung and overbred creatures she would not respond to blandishments. I could not get near her to stroke her. If you cannot establish contact with a cat it is impossible to become friends.

The end of the matter

Next morning whilst at the breakfast table with my mother I asked her "What has happened to Pussywillow?" Mother answered, "Oh, I forgot to tell you, she was run over in lane a few weeks ago." I kept my peace, after all, I was not in the habit of telling my parents about my psychic experiences.

What was the happy ending you ask?

  • Pussywillow was free of being tied to that spot in the road where she was killed
  • She forgot her pain and injuries as I stroked her
  • she was now free to move on
