There is increased background
staining, due in this instance to the presence of a large amount of
IgG myeloma protein in the serum. The abnormality is emphasised by the
small "tear" in the plasma layer. Amyloid has a tendency to infiltrate
the volar carpal tunnel and associated ligaments, thereby contributing
to median nerve compression.
