Race Report - Brands Hatch 19/20 May 2001
The Circuit
See the last race report for details of the circuit. The meeting was billed as a Classic meeting. Air displays from The Red Arrows and a Battle of Britain flypast took place in front of a crowd of 10,000.
Practice
Another long haul circuit for me, but I decided to test the day before practice. It seemed to pay off as I qualified 5th on the grid, though my own times saw me in sub 56 seconds and 4th place.
Race
Starting from the third row meant I had a good view of the lead cars, and providing I made a good start, the possibility of a good finish. The anticipation of gaining places off the 911s at the start was not borne out in practice. A little too much right foot left me with wheels spinning on the start line and rapid progression backwards to about 14th place. I set about trying to make some places up, but progress was a little slow due to the class 2 battle taking place. It took me about 4 laps to get past these cars, by which time most of the other class 1 cars had disappeared into the distance. I managed to pass Sid Dore and was catching the main group of cars. At the chequered flag just 4 seconds separate me from Colin Broster in 9th with only 8 seconds covering the next 5 cars. It was clear the car had potential, if only I could get it off the line !
