Calling Ex-RAF Wireless Operators (Air)

Were you an RAF Wireless Operator (Air)?  If you were I would very much like to talk to you.  As part of my display I am attempting to put together a collection of items used by Wireless Operators during the course of their duties.  I already have a complete R1155/T1154 radio and transmitter set-up with more or less all the ancillary equipment that went with them, but I would like to find out what other items of equipment a Wireless Operator would carry.  I understand that each W/Op. was issued with a ‘Signals’ or ‘Gen’ Satchel before each sortie, what did this Satchel look like and what did it contain?

As far as I can tell it would have contained such items as message books and forms, codes and frequencies of the day and a ruler and pencils etc.  I also understand that a Wireless Operator carried some spares for the radio such as fuses, valves and bulbs etc. but can you tell me exactly what spares were carried and what tools were carried to affect repairs?

If you can help me with any of these questions, or add any information relating to the Wireless Operator’s duties and equipment, I would be very interested to hear from you.  You can email me using the ‘Contact’ link on the Navigation Page.
