The Arete Mountaineering Club was originally was formed in April 1960 by Tom Colley and the late Brian Hathaway. Within 5 years a thriving walking and climbing club of some 40 members had been established. The regular meets were surprisingly widespread considering transport limitations of the day. However this level of commitment was soon in decline and by 1968 the club had effectively ceased to exist.
Also during the 1960's enthusiasts from David Brown Gears Ltd, Samuel Fox Steelworks (Stocksbridge) and surrounding villages were involved with various outdoor pursuits. This source provided the initial membership for the re-emerging Arete Mountaineering Club of 1970 which was again coordinated by original founding member - Brian Hathaway.
At first this small membership did not require any significant management; consequently, progression was slow and somewhat disorganised. Over the years however, an ever increasing skilful and experienced membership became more ambitious and adventurous. From the late 1970's European Alpine mountaineering preceded world wide expeditions. The need for a structured administration and highly organised club was apparent.
In 1986 the Arete Mountaineering Club affiliated with the British Mountaineering Council realising many advantages. A constitution was agreed and a management committee elected to oversee the administration.
Since 1975 active membership has fluctuated between 30 and 50 adults. Traditional core activities of walking, rock/ice-climbing and mountaineering have occasionally been supplemented by peripheral aspects such as mountain biking, orienteering, skiing, caving, potholing and mountain marathons.
The many social events that have been held over the years still remain popular. However, the "Reight" Material Awards and the infamous Carrot Cup have failed to survive due to increasing membership sensibility and respectability!
